Tokoloshe – The Scream of the Night
A three-part terrifying story based on African (Zulu and tribal) myths
Introduction: Who is Tokoloshe?
Tokoloshe is a demonic spirit in the beliefs of South African tribes, especially the Zulu and Xhosa people. It is described as a small, dwarf-like creature, part-human and part-animal, with glowing eyes, protruding teeth, and the ability to turn invisible.
Tokoloshes are believed to be created by witches or shamans who perform dark rituals, using dirty water, dead bodies, and sacrificial blood to summon the spirit from the underworld.
Mentions of Tokoloshe can be found in ancient oral traditions of the Zulu people such as the "Izibongo" (praise poems), and in the works of modern African writers like Credo Mutwa.
🔥 PART 1: The Night That Never Slept
Location: Isanga Village, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Year: 1963
A widow named Noluthando lived with her two children in a quiet rural village. But strange things had started happening—goats found slaughtered, children screaming in their sleep, and whispers around the village saying:
"The Tokoloshe is here…"
Noluthando didn’t believe in superstition—until her daughter Beyanka said one night:
“Mama… something grabbed my leg from under the bed…”
That night, a putrid smell filled the room, and tiny footsteps echoed from inside the closet.
The village elder warned her:
“Raise your bed off the ground… Tokoloshe hides underneath…”
She followed his advice, using bricks to lift her bed, but it was too late. The next morning, Beyanka’s eyes had turned white. She just stared at the wall and whispered:
“He’s eating me from the inside…”
Rumors spread: someone in the village had summoned a Tokoloshe—perhaps for revenge or out of jealousy.
😨 PART 2: The Curse Created
Year: 1912 – The Past
When did the Tokoloshe first appear?
In 1912, a village witch doctor named Umbaki was banished for performing death rituals and dark magic. As he left, he cursed them:
“Your sleep will never be peaceful again…”
He took the corpse of a dead baby, submerged it in the cursed river’s water, and chanted demonic spells. The soul returned—but twisted and corrupted—as a Tokoloshe.
Tokoloshe is invisible unless its name is spoken, or it invades someone's dreams. It can enter the body, possess the soul, and drive people insane.
Anyone can create a Tokoloshe from a dead body, given the right rituals—unclean water, forbidden incantations, and animal sacrifices.
Its only known weaknesses: red ash and goat’s blood.
👁️ PART 3: The Return of Tokoloshe
Time: 1984
Person: Thembah Matlu – A school teacher
Thembah returned to his ancestral village home to teach local children. But strange things began happening at night:
tiny footsteps, scratches on walls, and a shaking bed.
At first, he thought it was stress… until his wife started behaving strangely. She would wake up screaming:
“He’s inside me… he’s controlling me…”
One night, Thembah opened the old family wardrobe and found dried goat skin, red ash, and an ancient book titled:
"Izinto ezimnyama" (Dark Things)
The book said:
-
Tokoloshe hides beneath the bed
-
It can be controlled by feeding it dead animal flesh
-
If its name is spoken three times, it will appear
Without realizing it, Thembah muttered:
“Tokoloshe… Tokoloshe… Tokoloshe…”
Everything went dark.
His house was found burned. His wife was missing. Thembah was discovered unconscious in the forest—his eyes pure white, his arms scratched and bleeding.
They say that even now, if someone sleeps alone with a guilty heart…
The Tokoloshe will come for them.
