Draugr – The Norse (Viking) Ghost
Part 1 – The Curse of the Barrow
It was the 8th century. In the cold winds of the North Sea, the tales of Norse warriors echoed. Among snow-covered valleys, on stones carved with ancient runes, and in the depths of dark forests, people trembled at a single name — Draugr.
The Beginning of the Story
In a small Norwegian village called Herfjord, people lived with their backs turned to the sea. Long wooden houses, horses tied in stables, and elders telling sagas by the fire — all this was part of Viking life. But this village hid a terrifying secret.
Outside the village, on the top of a hill, there was a burial mound — a barrow. It was said that a fearsome warrior named Arnbjorn was buried there. He was the most ruthless Viking, whose own hands were stained with the blood of his kin. In battle, he was invincible, but people feared that even in death, his soul would never rest.
So when he died, they didn’t bury him in the ordinary way. They hammered iron nails into his chest, bound his hands and feet, and shoved him into the earth. No one dared to burn his body, for they believed that fire would only make his spirit more powerful.
The First Night
On the third night after his death, a village girl named Ingrid said to her mother:
“Mother, I saw a shadow walking on the hill… It was huge, like the body of a warrior.”
Her mother scolded her:
“Silence, child. Looking outside at night is a bad omen.”
But the truth was that many had heard heavy footsteps in the fields that night. On the snow were tracks, as if something massive had been dragged across it.
The Awakening of the Draugr
Soon rumors spread. An old warrior, Erik the Grey, declared:
“This must be a draugr. Draugrs are dead warriors whose corpses do not rot. They come out at night to attack the living. They are so heavy they can crush bones beneath them. And if their gaze falls on you, you sicken and die.”
The villagers believed him, for at night the air around the barrow often carried the stench of rotting flesh and iron.
The Bloody Scene
One night, a shepherd named Olaf was tending his sheep. By morning, when people went to check, the flock was scattered, and Olaf’s body lay broken in the field. His chest was crushed, his bones shattered, as though something had stomped him flat.
On his face was frozen terror — eyes bulging, mouth wide open.
Everyone knew then: this was the work of the draugr.
Terror in the Village
Villagers began barricading their homes with wood and stone. They sat by the fire, singing old sagas so that the spirit would not come near. But the draugr’s shadow grew stronger.
Sometimes a man would vanish from the fields. Sometimes horses were found dead in the stables.
People whispered:
“He doesn’t just walk outside… Sometimes he climbs onto rooftops and rides the horses all night. By morning, they collapse and die of exhaustion. And if he sits on a man’s chest, the ribs are crushed to pieces.”
The Warriors’ Oath
Fear became unbearable. The village warriors gathered for a council.
Erik the Grey said:
“We must stop him. If Arnbjorn has truly become a draugr, he must be burned. Without iron, fire, and runes, his soul will never rest.”
But this was no easy task. The barrow was surrounded by icy winds and ominous shadows. No one dared approach it at night.
Still, four brave warriors stepped forward. They inscribed their swords with runes, took iron nails and burning torches, and swore an oath:
“If we return, the village will be safe. If we do not… burn our bodies, do not bury us.”
The First Steps Up the Hill
That night, the moon was blood red. The warriors’ breath rose like mist as they climbed the snowy slope. When they reached the barrow, the earth began to move.
Suddenly, a massive black hand burst from the soil — swollen, rotting, yet terribly strong.
It was the draugr. His eyes glowed like blue fire, and fragments of broken armor still clung to his body. Iron nails jutted from his chest, but they had not stopped him.
His roaring voice split the silence of the night:
“I am Arnbjorn… Death did not defeat me. Now you all are my prey!”
The four warriors drew their swords. The flames of their torches flickered wildly.
The fate of the village now rested on this battle.

Part 2 – Snow Soaked in Blood
The Barrow’s Gate Opens
The four warriors stood in front of the terrifying shadow, their torches casting flickering light.
The draugr’s eyes burned like blue volcanoes on the snow, and the air felt colder than ice itself.
Its body was so heavy that the ground shook beneath it.
Erik the Grey roared:
— Arnbjorn! You have terrorized this village. Today, you will be burned forever!
But the draugr’s laughter cut through the icy night:
— I am dead… And now death is part of me. Your swords cannot kill me.
The First Strike
Suddenly, the draugr leapt forward. Its massive, heavy hand grabbed the warrior Sigurd and lifted him into the air.
Bones cracked with a sickening sound. In the next moment, Sigurd’s chest was crushed, and his body fell to the snow.
Blood stained the white snow crimson.
The remaining three warriors trembled but did not retreat.
Iron and Fire
Erik thrust his torch forward, and the other warrior, Bjorn, struck with his sword.
The blade slid across the draugr’s skin as if striking stone.
But when the runes on the sword glowed, the creature recoiled, and its moan echoed across the mountain.
Erik shouted:
— The runes are working! It can only be defeated with iron and fire!
The Night Battle
The three attacked together. Torches burned, swords glimmered.
The draugr grabbed and threw them into the snow, pressed them down. Its strength was many times that of a human.
Still, each strike and every flash of burning iron weakened it.
A stench of rotting flesh rose from its body, and its blue-fire eyes kept dimming intermittently.
Attack on the Village
Meanwhile, screams rang out in the village.
People saw the draugr’s shadow stretching toward their homes.
Roofs shook, horses ran wild, and children shivered in their mothers’ arms.
One woman cried out:
— It has reached our homes! If the warriors fail, we will all die!
Sacrifice
The battle raged on. Bjorn drove an iron spear into the draugr’s chest. It roared, and its blue eyes flared like burning fire.
But the strike only enraged it further. The draugr seized Bjorn and snapped his neck.
Only two warriors remained — Erik and Hrolf.
Hrolf looked at Erik and said:
— If it reaches the village, no one will survive. I’ll hold it… you light the fire.
Hrolf plunged his sword into the draugr’s throat and threw himself into its grasp.
The draugr seized him in fury, but Erik used the moment to ignite fires with torches and dry wood all around.
The Burning Night
The draugr screamed, and its voice echoed across the mountains.
Flames engulfed its decaying body. Its blue eyes disappeared into smoke.
Hrolf’s scream and the draugr’s roar merged, vanishing into the snow.
After a while, only ashes, the smell of burning bones, and silence remained.
Relief in the Village
Erik returned alone. Villagers gathered around him.
— Is it gone? — a child asked, trembling.
Erik took a heavy breath:
— Its body is burned… but its soul? Perhaps it still wanders this frozen land.
The villagers, with Erik, scattered the ashes down the mountain.
Yet some swore they still saw the blue glowing eyes in the smoke.
Part 2 Ends
