🩸 Burwa Dev – The Oath of the Forest
(Part 1: The Awakening of the Spirit)
📖 Mythological Origin:
According to Gond tribal legends, a terrifying spirit named Burwa Dev is mentioned in ancient oral epics like “Lingopen Purana” and “Kusumlal Charitra.” It is said that he was a Gond sorcerer who mastered black magic and took control of the forest. But when he unleashed his wrath upon his own village, the people burned him alive in the jungle.
Before dying, he cursed them:
“Every year, I demand a blood offering. If you leave me hungry, your children’s hearts will wander in my forest!”
🩸 The Beginning of the Story:
Year: 1971.
Season: Monsoon.
Location: A dense forest village on the edge of Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh — Bisahipur.
Gond priestess Mother Jagni had a haunting dream — a voice from the forest:
"I'm hungry... so hungry..."
The next morning, five houses in the village were hit by a strange illness.
Children began vomiting blood.
Cattle died.
Crops turned black.
🧙♂️ Testimonies from the Victims:
Rame Gond, 60 years old:
“My grandson was playing when he suddenly stood still and said, ‘Burwa Baba has come!’ Then his eyes rolled back... and the next day, he died.”
Soma Bai, a widow:
“Someone knocked at my door at night... the door never opened, but black smoke started pouring out from the walls. I can never forget that night.”
🌑 The Ritual of Sacrifice:
Every year on the night of the new moon, the villagers sacrificed a black goat to appease Burwa Dev.
But this year, the newly elected village chief Bhikhlal dismissed it as superstition and canceled the ritual.
That mistake... became the beginning of terror.
🪓 The Awakening of Burwa Dev:
On the third night, the villagers heard the eerie sound of metal bells in the fog.
Tree barks oozed lines of blood.
Then the village chief’s wife was found hanging upside down, half-naked from a mango tree.
Carved into her forehead were the words:
“I will not stay hungry anymore.”
😱 Screams of the Forest:
Mother Jagni warned:
“Burwa Dev will not stop. Until the offering is made, he will claim one life every night.”
And he did —
In 7 nights, there were 9 deaths.
🚩 End of Part 1:
The village decides that a human sacrifice is now required.
But who will it be?
-
The chief’s son?
-
The shaman’s daughter?
-
Or the stranger who arrived just yesterday?
The answer lies in Part 2...
🩸 Part 2: The Bloody Return of the Curse
👤 Who Will Be the Sacrifice?
In a tense village council:
-
Chief Bhikhlal insists the stranger should be offered — “He’s not one of us.”
-
Shaman Gangadhar argues it should be the chief’s own son — “He defied the gods.”
-
Mother Jagni says, “No one will survive until the old sin is accepted.”
Just then, a blind sage enters the gathering, holding a copper tablet stained in blood.
📜 The Copper Tablet:
The sage speaks:
“I am the brother of Burwa Dev. He embraced the dark, while I chose the light.”
“He demanded sacrifices to make his soul immortal. With every drop of blood, he extended his cursed existence.”
“But he can be stopped — if his soul is returned to the Cave of Death in the jungle where he was burned alive.”
🏞️ The Journey to the Cave of Death:
Four people set out:
-
Gangadhar, the tantrik (shaman).
-
Arjun, the village chief’s son.
-
Mother Jagni, the dream-seer.
-
And the stranger, who now speaks his truth — he is Rudra, an orphan abandoned by this very village.
🌲 Night in the Jungle:
As they enter the forest, blood drips from trees.
A stench fills the air.
Distant metallic bells echo through the darkness.
Outside the cave lies a skeleton. Gangadhar says:
“This was a sacrifice left incomplete years ago.”
As they step inside — silence. Then shadows stir.
🩸 The Spirit's Form:
At the end of the cave sits a bone-clad figure, wrapped in blood-stained threads. Its eyes are hollow pits, and it whispers:
“Give me blood! Or I’ll devour your entire village!”
Mother Jagni steps forward, ready to slit her own throat.
But Rudra stops her:
“Not you… The one born cursed must end it.”
He steps forward.
Black fire erupts from his chest.
🔥 The Truth Revealed:
Rudra is the reincarnation of Burwa Dev.
His soul returned through a failed sacrifice long ago.
But now he has remembered everything — and chooses to destroy himself.
“I’ve seen what hunger for immortality can do. This ends now.”
He throws himself into the flames.
A massive blast.
The cave collapses.
Only Gangadhar and Arjun survive.
🌄 The Morning After:
For the first time in decades, sunlight reaches the village floor.
The sick rise from their beds.
The crops regain color.
The smell of death disappears.
On the temple wall, a message appears:
“He who sacrificed himself became the true god.”
🕯️ Final Lines:
Burwa Dev is no more…
But even now, some say, on windless nights deep in the jungle...
You can still hear the jingling of his bells.
Has he really vanished? Or is he only asleep...?
