PART 1: THE SHADOW THAT
FOLLOWED ME
Title: Bhua – The Shadow of the Forest Spirit
Context:
The spirit known as "Bhua" (also called "Baan Dev" in Gond tribal lore) was first referenced in oral traditions of the Gond community from the Bastar region of Central India during the late 18th century. According to these beliefs, when a person dies an unnatural death—especially alone in a field or forest—and without proper rituals, their soul lingers and becomes a restless spirit. This spirit haunts farmlands during harvest season, seeking peace or revenge. A recorded mention appears in the 1906 anthropological document “Ethnographic Notes on the Tribes of Central India”, where it's described as a "Forest Spirit Possession in Gond Fields".
Year 1972 — Pichkori Village, near the Bastar border
My name is Lakhma, a member of the Gond tribe. I am telling you all this now because half the people of my village lie dead in the fields. Some had their faces clawed open. Others—eyes pushed out... someone’s tongue was hanging loose.
It all began during harvest season.
After the monsoon, our village land was known to be the most fertile. The rice stalks bowed low as if offering blessings. That year, our village seer, Parganiya Baba, made a strange prediction:
"The crops will be heavy... but so will the curse. Bhua has awakened."
We laughed. Bhua was just a scary bedtime tale told by elders. They used to say that when someone dies without last rites—especially in a field—their soul remains stuck, haunting the living during harvest.
But the real terror began when Ramu died.
Scene 1 – The Severed Head and the
Unfinished Harvest
Ramu was working alone in the field at dusk. When people went to find him, his body lay motionless—but his head was found inside the rice bundles, turned upside down. The ground was wet—either with blood or something worse.
The village fell into panic. That’s when the tribal priest Guniya Nanda said:
"This is the work of Bhua. And he won’t stop now."
That very night... I saw Bhua for the first time.
Scene 2 – The First Glimpse of Bhua
I was sleeping... but it felt like someone was pulling me out of bed and toward the fields. There, far off near the bushes, I saw a dark figure—its face looked like swirling smoke, but its eyes were burning red. It held a sickle in one hand and swayed as if dancing... demanding something.
It was screaming in the Gond language:
"Mola bisar dehe! Mola sanjeevani de!"
(Give me peace! Give me life back!)
I trembled. I ran. I fell. But the voice chased me all the way.
Next morning... Bhima was missing.
Scene 3 – The Sun Went Blind
In the days that followed, a fog began to hang over the fields even during daytime. Birds stopped flying. The sun looked hazy, as if shrouded in smoke. Guniya warned us:
"Bhua has become Baan Devta now — the spirit god of the forest. He demands sacrifice. If not... the entire village will perish."
The Legend of Bhua – A Forgotten Truth
According to Guniya, years ago, a Gond boy named Jurma was forced to work the fields by British officials. He was sick. He collapsed and died in the fields. His body was never given rituals. Vultures tore him apart.
Since then, every seventh year, someone had mysteriously died in the same field.
That cursed soul had now returned... and he was no longer just Jurma.
He had become Bhua — the Devourer of the Fields.
PART 2: THE RETURN OF BAAN DEV – THE FINAL SACRIFICE
(Four times longer, darker, and more terrifying than Part 1)
Chapter 1: The Shadows of the Dead
After Ramu, Bhima, and two others died, our village was gripped with fear. Children screamed in their sleep. Women had nightmares filled with fiery eyes and whispers from the dark.
Guniya said, “He can only be stopped by someone who has felt the same pain he did. Someone who has lost loved ones to the fields.”
I stepped forward.
Chapter 2: The Attack on the Village
On the night of the full moon, even the sacred Mahua branches hanging on every door couldn’t keep Bhua away. This time, he didn’t appear in the fields—
he came into the heart of the village.
Clay pots flew off shelves. Strange voices echoed in empty courtyards. One woman—Suku Bai—began bleeding from her eyes and muttered only one line again and again:
“Oh my Jurma boy... have you returned to punish us?”
Now, everyone understood — Bhua wasn’t just a ghost anymore.
He had become a vengeful forest god.
Chapter 3: Preparing the Sacrifice
Guniya trained me. Seven days of fasting. I ate nothing but ash and forest herbs.
On the seventh night, I was taken to the cursed field—
where Ramu had died.
Chapter 4: The Final Confrontation
As I stepped into the field, the wind stopped. The darkness circled like a storm.
And then I saw him —
Bhua — tall, monstrous, eyes burning, his sickle dragging along the ground, with bones and dried skulls hanging like ornaments.
He roared:
“Why did you forget my death? I don’t want forgiveness. I want vengeance!”
I fell to my knees.
“You are Jurma... our brother. We forgot you... but not anymore.”
I placed a Mahua leaf at his feet, symbol of peace, and let my own blood drip onto it.
Suddenly, the wind stopped. The clouds parted.
And Bhua... began to dissolve into ash.
But before he vanished, he whispered:
“Every generation gives birth to another Bhua...
Can you stop him next time?”
Epilogue – Bhua Still Waits
Years have passed. The village is quiet now. But every seventh year, that same field grows cold again. A shadow moves just out of sight.
They say...
Bhua never left. He only sleeps.
